About Lima Airport
Lima (LIM) Airport is known as Aeropuerto
Internacional Jorge Chávez, situated in Callao, the port
city which now is integrated with Lima, the capital of
Peru. It is the Peru’s main international airport being
one of the leading business and tourism destinations in
South America.
This airport is also a domestic one because it has
connections which major cities as Machu Picchu,
Trujillo, Cusco, Iquitos and Arequipa. Even if the
airport is considered one of the best modern airports in
South America, its frequent flights concern only South
America, North America and Europe. The airport reached
10,278,493 passengers at the end of 2010; nowadays it
serves as a hub for many airline companies.
During its developing, in 1960 the airport ceased its
operations because of lack of space (at the beginning
the airport was named Limatambo Airport, situated in San
Isidro). Then, its location was changed in Callao and
began the Lima-Callao International Airport. Its actual
name comes from a Peruvian aviator Jorge Chávez Dartnell.
All its problems concerning outdated technology in radar
and safety and lack of space for passengers seem to
finish once the airport continues to extend. Thanks to
its construction of terminals, we expect that tourism
and commercial passenger traffic increase in Peru
dramatically, a higher growth than anywhere else in
Latin America.
